To delete your SpaceBox account, reset the app on every device where your vault is set up, then permanently delete every recovery file you saved. After that, nobody can ever open your files again, including us.
There is no “Delete account” button, because there is no traditional account to delete. This page explains why, and why this method protects you the same way deletion would.
We hold no account details. SpaceBox never asks for an email address, a phone number or a password. Your vault is a display name you chose and a private key created on your device. Unlike most services, we have no login details or contact information about you to erase.
Storage is append-only. Once a file is stored, it is never removed, by you or by us. That is part of what makes SpaceBox hard to tamper with: nobody, including an attacker or i46, can quietly remove or alter what was stored.
Your key is what matters. Every file is encrypted on your device before it is uploaded, with a key that only you hold. What we store is encrypted data that we cannot read. Without your key, it can never be opened, by anyone.
So deleting a SpaceBox account means destroying every copy of its key. Once no copy exists, your files remain only as unreadable encrypted data. This method is known as cryptographic erasure, and it is a recognised way of sanitising data, used for example to wipe encrypted drives.
Resetting doesn't undo what you have already set up, so deal with these first. The reset walks you through the first two.
On a phone, open More › Reset this device. On a computer, open Settings › Reset this device. Follow the steps to the end.
If you recovered your vault on more than one device, reset each one. Each device holds a copy of the key.
A recovery file and its passphrase can bring your vault back on any device. Your account is gone only once every copy of the file is gone too. Look everywhere you might have kept one:
Then destroy any note of the passphrase.
After a reset, the app keeps nothing of your vault. You can uninstall it or start a new vault.
SpaceBox Lite keeps your key only on your device, and has no recovery file. To delete a Lite account, reset the app with the Reset button at the top of the screen. Your drops then stay stored, but nobody can open them again, including i46. A storage pack is lost with the account.
| Item | After you delete your account |
|---|---|
| Your files | Stay stored as encrypted data that nobody can open, including i46. |
| Account identifier, display name, public key | Stay stored. They are not linked to an email address, a phone number or anything else we could use to identify you. |
| File details | File names, sizes, dates and sharing records stay stored. They were never encrypted, so that the people you shared with could see them. |
| Files you still share | The people you shared them with can still open them, and keep any copy they saved. |
| Accepted transfers | Stay with their new owners. |
| Armed deadman's switches | Fire when their timers end, and the files go to their heirs. |
| Storage pack | Is lost. It can't be moved to another vault. Apple and Google handle refunds for store purchases. |
| Data on your devices | The reset removes the key, activity log, settings and names you gave to contacts and files. |
Before you delete every recovery file, be sure about your decision. While a copy of the file and its passphrase exists, you can recover your vault from the first screen of the app. Once every copy is gone, nobody can bring your vault back, not even i46.
This is currently the only way to delete a SpaceBox account. We do not offer any other deletion service at this time. The legal wording is in the Privacy Policy (section 7) and the Terms (section 13). You can also read both in the app under More › Help and legal (on a computer, Help & legal).
